The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) entitles European travellers to free or reduced cost medical care, at state-run facilities, in the European Economic Area (EEA) and Switzerland. It does not cover non-urgent treatment, so comprehensive travel insurance is advised.

A yellow fever vaccination certificate is required from travellers over one year of age arriving in (or going to as a destination) the Azores or Madeira, if coming from infected areas. However, no certificate is required from passengers transiting through Funchal, Porto Santo and Santa Maria.
